FAQs about Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy or physical therapy is a scientific method of treatment that restores active or passive body movements through exercises and other techniques.

Physiotherapy offers solutions to nearly all problems that affect body movement(s). Treatments are available for musculoskeletal problems, neurological problems, recovery of physical movements after surgery, lung and heart problems, prenatal and postnatal care, birth problems of children, elderly care and sports injuries through physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy works by causing physiological changes in the body through physical means that bring about therapeutic outcomes.

Physiotherapists offer a wide array of treatments for diverse health conditions. These include manual therapies like mobilization and manipulation, customized exercises to enhance strength and flexibility, electrotherapies for pain relief, and heat/cold therapy to reduce inflammation. Posture awareness, hydrotherapy, taping, dry needling, and patient education are also common. Additionally, they focus on pain management, functional training, gait improvement, and strength training, all tailored to individual needs for optimal results.

A standard physiotherapy session usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. However, session duration may fluctuate based on the patient’s condition and treatment goals determined by the therapist.

Like I said in the answer above for duration, the number of sessions is completely based on the patient’s condition and goals set.

Physiotherapy procedures are usually not painful. However, some techniques may cause mild and temporary pain. One advice should be remembered that the pain of the cure is better than the pain of the disease!

In this regard, physiotherapy is considered a safe method of treatment. Sometimes after a session there may be a temporary increase in the pain or a slight soreness. In such a case, the patient should inform his therapist of unusual symptoms.

Since physiotherapy is a complete treatment method that has all characteristics to be called an independent profession, physiotherapists are autonomous in most countries. In Pakistan too, patients can go directly to a physiotherapist or consult their doctor for such matters.
